Eastbourne Liberal Jewish Community was founded in 2001.
We are a registered charity, number 1115670.
Until recently, we had a part-time rabbi, Rabbi Roberta Harris-Eckstein, ordained in 2018. Most of our services are now led by our community's talented lay leaders, presently all in Zoomed mode for the time being. In the meantime, Rabbi Roberta is still affiliated with us and occasionally conducts services — and still carries out some educational and pastoral work for the community. She should continue to be available for special lifecycle ceremonies such as weddings, baby blessings, funerals and stone settings.
The Community is a constituent of Liberal Judaism, one of the leading non-orthodox Jewish denominations in the UK. For information on Liberal Judaism see www.liberaljudaism.org. Liberal Judaism welcomes men and women equally and those in mixed faith or same sex relationships. It also welcomes matrilineal and patrilineal Jews.
Our membership rates for 2020- 21 are £130 a year for full adult members
and £70 a year for associate or reduced rate members.
If you are interested in conversion to Judaism, please phone/text: 07497 401280 or email: email@example.com. We can arrange an initial interview with Rabbi Roberta who will advise on a course of study leading to eventual admission to the Jewish faith. All prospective proselytes are expected to join ELJC as associate members before beginning the formal course. Those with Jewish parentage, but no Jewish religious education, may follow the same course leading to a certificate of affirmation. See www.liberaljudaism.org for more information on conversion.
In some circumstances, reduced rate membership is available. If you are in genuine financial hardship and/or receive certain state benefits, please complete the application form below and send or scan it to us. Any information you provide will remain completely confidential.
We only provide lifecycle ceremonies (weddings, funerals, stone settings, bar/bat mitzvah, baby naming) for our members. If you are interested in a lifecycle ceremony and are not a member, please contact us for advice on applying.
ELJC can arrange a Jewish funeral (whether for burial or cremation) in Eastbourne or elsewhere for members or non-members (subject to special conditions) conducted by a Liberal Judaism rabbi. In the event of a death, please phone 07497 401280 or Rosedale Funeral Service on 01323 726100.
ELJC can also arrange weddings and marriage blessings (subject to conditions).
To arrange to discuss this, please phone/text 07497 401280 or email: firstname.lastname@example.org.
We have a safeguarding policy which is available on request.
ELJC continues to develop and serves members in the wider East Sussex area (Hastings/St Leonards, Bexhill, Seaford, Uckfield, Lewes, Wadhurst, East Grinstead) as well as in Eastbourne.
